“I know a lot of DPs who do photography and their photography just seems a literal copy of their cinematography where everything looks like a movie still. Her work is very photographic, displaying an understanding of each mediums’ strength.”

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Etienne has a background in illustration and graphic design. After completing a BA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins, she went on to study cinematography, graduating with an MA from Met Film School, and later completed a masterclass in documentary filmmaking with Oscar-winning documentarian Kirsten Johnson at The University of Hong Kong.

Working as a freelance cinematographer, Etienne collaborates with filmmakers from diverse creative backgrounds. Her films have been screened in competition at festivals including Lift-Off Film Festival, Freshwave, and the Microfilm Production Support Scheme.

Alongside her moving-image practice, Etienne maintains an ongoing street photography practice that informs her cinematographic approach. Initially rooted in the desire to create visual memories for others, street photography has evolved into a method of observation and self-reflection. Through attentive framing, sensitivity to natural light, and an openness to candid moments, this practice shapes how she approaches rhythm, intimacy, and presence in her cinematography.
